FAQs

How is Sri Lankan mango chutney different from Indian mango chutney?
Sri Lankan chutney is cooked to a dark, jam-like relish with vinegar, ginger, garlic, chilli and spices such as cardamom and nutmeg. It is sweeter and smoother than a raw Indian pickle-style chutney and has no oil.

Is it vegan?
The jar lists only mango, sugar, vinegar, garlic, ginger, chilli, mustard, salt and spices, with no animal ingredients, so it suits vegetarians and vegans as an ingredient list. There is no vegan certification mark on the jar.

What do I eat it with?
Rice and curry, lamprais, biryani, yellow rice, bread, cutlets and fish rolls are the usual pairings. It is also good with cheese, grilled chicken or as a sandwich spread, and a spoonful lifts a plain dhal.

How sweet or salty is it?
As printed on the jar, a 25 g serving has about 10 g of sugars and 300 mg of sodium, so treat it as a condiment: a tablespoon beside the plate rather than a side dish. The vinegar keeps the sweetness in check.

How long does an opened jar keep?
Refrigerate after opening and use a clean, dry spoon. The sugar and vinegar keep it in good condition for weeks; check the date printed on the jar and discard it if the surface shows mould or the smell changes.
