What is coconut treacle, and how is it different from maple syrup or molasses?
Coconut treacle is boiled-down sap from the coconut palm, not a by-product of sugar refining like molasses. It is thinner than molasses, with a caramel taste, and is used the way Americans use maple syrup.
Is coconut treacle the same as kithul treacle?
No. Kithul treacle comes from the sap of the kithul (fishtail) palm, while coconut treacle comes from the coconut palm. Both are poured over curd and used in Sri Lankan sweets, and the flavour of coconut treacle is a little milder.
